Baseball - the ultimate summer sport

Baseball is a fun and exciting summer sport. Northland Baseball runs an afterschool competition for children aged 5-14. The 2009 season is starting soon, and we have some big changes in store.

Games will be played on Thursday afternoons at William Fraser Memorial Park in Whangarei. The season will run during Term 4, 2009. Baseball camps will be held during Term 1, 2010, in preparation for the National Baseball Championships which will be held in Auckland.

Baseball was introduced to Whangarei by Miguel Abascal in 2006. Miguel, a passionate American, played professional baseball before moving to New Zealand. He saw a chance to develop the sport, and worked with local parents, children and supporters to grow the Northland Baseball league.

Nationally, there are baseball competitions in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Baseball New Zealand has hundreds of junior and senior players registered.

Baseball is growing fast in Northland, with more than 200 children involved across the region.
